The study “Rural and Urban: Migrations, Residential Environment, and Opportunity Structures,” developed by the Metrópoli Institute on behalf of the Barcelona Metropolitan Strategic Plan (PEMB), the Association of Rural Initiatives of Catalonia (ARCA), and the Catalan Association of Municipalities (ACM), reveals that in recent years, the population that leaves the city to live in rural areas has increased in Catalonia.

The research estimates that, at least, in the next 5 years, almost 70,000 people will migrate from urban areas of the Barcelona metropolitan region to semi-dense or rural areas. They are 30% of those who plan to change their municipality of residence.
