Abstract:
In post-industrial societies, poverty and marginalization can no longer be considered cyclical or conjunctural phenomena. Successive capitalist crises have left behind a growth in extreme forms of precariousness and a state reaction based on the stigmatization and criminalization of social groups that are systematically excluded from the benefits of economic growth.
Through several examples, this article starts from the “discovery of marginalized classes” during the era of welfare states and the construction of poverty as an object of intervention by social-democratic public policies, to delve, through some examples, into the stigmatizing discourses that justify the neoliberal management of misery.
