The Barcelona City Council, through the Human Rights Resource Center and other municipal bodies, has launched a participatory process to create and validate categories of ethnic, racial, and national self-identification, as well as other intersectional identities such as language and religion. This project, aligned with European guidelines, aims primarily to reach a consensus on these categories with Barcelona’s communities and validate their adequacy and representativeness. Additionally, it seeks to raise awareness of the initiative among local entities and understand how social conditions influence discrimination and access to rights.
As a final goal of this process, the aim is also to standardize these categories in surveys to collect data that make inequalities visible and improve the analysis of social phenomena. Throughout 2024, neighourliness and urban security team at Institut Metròpoli has collaborated with the City Council’s Human Rights Resource Center to incorporate this perspective into the 2024 Neighborhood Relations and Conviviality Survey (ECAMB 2024). This report summarizes the participatory process carried out with the communities and the initial findings from the ECAMB.
