What is GEM?
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is an annual cross-sectional assessment of the entrepreneurial activity around the world. Initiated in 1999 as a partnership between London Business School and Babson College, the first study covered 10 countries; since then nearly 100 ‘National Teams’ from every corner of the globe have participated in the project, which continues to grow annually.
The GEM project is the largest on-going study of entrepreneurial activities worldwide, and its purpose is to measure differences in the level of entrepreneurial activity between countries, toi uncover factors determining the levels of entrepreneurial activity, and to identify policies that help enhancing the level of entrepreneurial activity.
More specifically, the project investigates the following topics:
- Analysis of the regional and national factors driving entrepreneurial activity
- The development of policies by governments to promote entrepreneurship
- The relationship between business creation opportunities and involvement of the adult population in this process
- The observed differences in national and international rates of business creation
- The estimate of the contribution of the business sector to the economy
